Advantage Bead Filter

Clear Solutions for Your Pond

How easy is the filter to assemble?

It is simple enough for one person to setup in about 1 hour when following the provided instructions.  We recommend not adding all the beads until you have completed the plumbing to the filter. This makes it easier to move the filter if needed.

How far should I install the pump and filter from the pond?

A reasonable distance is up to 25 feet when running 2-inch PVC pipes. Distances further then 30 feet require using 3 inch PVC pipes to reduce friction and increase flow.

What types of elbows should I use?

When using elbow fittings, consider using elbow sweeps or street sweeps. They have a curve or radius turn instead of a sharp ninety-degree turn. This will improve flow rates and filtering of your ponds volume more often each day.

What type of glue should I use?

  • PVC: Use clear glue. This works fine if you also use a primer or prep both surfaces with an 80 or 100 grit sand paper prior to gluing.
  • PVC to Flex PVC: Use hotter blue glue made by Oatey, named Rain-R-Shine PVC Cement. This is available at most hardware stores.
  • PVC to ABS: Requires a “combination” glue designed for cementing PVC and ABS piping.

How long can the pump be off and not pumping through the filter?

Your filter should not be off for more then 4 hours. The beneficial bacteria in the filter require oxygen for survival. If you’re experiencing a power outage, consider removing the dome lid and inserting an airline from a battery operated air pump down to the bottom. Be sure to turn off the pump to prevent it from pumping again when the power resumes.

How many boxes should I expect?

What extra features does the Advantage Bead filter have as compared to other brands?

All the extras and more. Not only does the Advantage Bead filter come with a tough fiberglass body that is warranted for life, it also comes with the highest flow rated valve body available along with a hefty 2 horse power blower. Other brands will include something much smaller if any blower at all comes with it and some brands even charge extra for it.

Can I purchase an Advantage Glass filter later on?

Yes! Adding on an Advantage Glass filter at a later time is easy to do. It requires cutting your plumbing on the bead filter "Out" port and then connecting this to the Glass filter "In", then the Glass filters "Out" continues on to what was once the bead filters "out" pipe.

NOTE: Adding the Advantage Glass filter will also increase the total head pressure to the system. You will need a pump that can handle this added resistance. This may require purchasing a different pump.

Can I bypass the Glass filter?

Yes. The Advantage Glass filter valve body has a position labeled "Recirculate". This will permit water coming from the bead filter to bypass the glass filter and continue on.

What is the purpose of the valve mounted to the top of the Glass filter?

This is a ball valve that is openned during the backwashing proceedure of the Advantage Glass filter.
